Hello again Vivienne, working backward through your pictures: I cannot imagine whatever possessed you to do this abseiling thing, it makes me dizzy just looking at you there suspended in midair!
What is this "obsession" :-) with bridges in Newcastle? There has to be a reason for having so many! I am not sure but it seems to me that you have more bridges than London?
What is the ---don Square? A Shopping Mall? And what is this wonderful structure topped with a cupola?
If I interpret one of your pictures correctly, it seems that high rise buildings are only at the edge of the city. This was done in Paris. After a high rise was built in Montparnasse, Parisian decided to limit building of such to areas away from the city center.
Grey's monument reminds me of the Sieges Saeule in Berlin.
Thank You again for posting these interesting photos.

Evening all,
Inga if you care to look up www.picturesofgateshead.co.uk/postcards_newcastle1/ you will see some very old pictures of how Newcastle used to be. Gateshead is a town on the opposite bank of the river Tyne, facing Newcastle. We have a lot of traffic going backwards and forwards over the river, so much so that the Tyne has several bridges crossing it, as you have seen. The High Level bridge has trains travelling on the top, and until recently road traffic underneath. Needless to say the bridge isn't arched. (he says with a grin). Another of the bridges is only used by the Metro system, underground in some areas, above ground the rest of the time.
The river Tyne also boasts a tunnel river crossing, its about 10miles downriver of Newcastle and one has to pay to use it. I hope this is of interest.

Sid - as Ian would say: fascinating stuff! Some of postcards are just beautiful, all of them very interesting and there's one which has me completely puzzled. The one with the title Quayside, Sunday Morning. What on earth are all of those people doing? How did they keep from getting crushed? Is it a joke? Trick photography?
VIVIENNE - just heard Ian read the Beaver Dam letter. What makes stuff like this so funny is that one can imagine that it actually happened, whether it did or not is of no consequence!

Morning everyone, its a lovely day.
The photo you refer to Inga is of the Quayside Market. It was first held in....1736, and is still going.
Another good website for photo's is www.monkchester.co.uk/index.htm
The pics of the Tall Ships Race (where they are berthed in the river) are particularly spectacular.

VIVIENNE, I told Wendell - well I tried to anyway - about the Beaver Dam letter but I just couldn't do it the justice it deserves. I told him that I will either ask you to send me a copy or try to find it on the net. I did find it, printed it and will give it to him tomorrow. Since all of you have seen the pictures of Wendell's lake you are right to assume that he can relate to this issue and therefore will find it as hilarious at it is.
