I bet those cobbles are hard to walk on. It was bad enough coming down our street on a bike 'in the old days'.
You had good weather for your Heritage weekend Vivienne. Bet you were busy...

Hi Sid,

Yes, we had a fantastic turn out. I wasn't asked to work that day, but went in as a visitor. The crypt, under the Chapel, was open for the Heritage Day (we only had free entry on Saturday), so I was keen to go inside. The crypt was larger than I imagined - circular, with recesses around the wall, six of which contained coffins with members of the Bowes family.

Afterwards I took a stroll up to the stables to see what was happening in the bookshop. There I found a young girl working on her own. As I entered she was struggling to find change for a customer, and the shop was full. The trays of food were almost empty and the ice-cream freezer was in complete disarray. Needless to say I stayed and helped out. It turned out that the volunteer hadn't turned up, so one of the staff from the tearoom had been sent up. Poor girl, she was well out of her depth, as she'd been given out of date instructions on various procedures, and she didn't know where some of the stock was kept.
It was a good thing I went in!

Tuesday was very quiet, but I had time to talk with visitors, and tell them some of the history about Mary Eleanor Bowes.

Yes, the cobbles are hard work. Even George seemed to be slipping on them!

I'm sorry I missed seeing you all at Birkheads, but glad you had a good time. Wednesdays are usually ok for me, unless I have a dental appointment at the A1 Clinic in South Shields. Hopefully I've only one more to go, and that's for a review next week. I've been having treatment there for an implant.
